Apart from the Spouse, Family and Guest programme, there are numerous activities and experiences to do in and around Livingstone. The following are some examples of what one can do once in Livingstone. All these activities can be booked on arrival in Livingstone.
A natural phenomenon and one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls is an immense 1.7 km wide curtain of water cascading 100+m into the gorge.
To discover how the Falls were formed and what local customs and traditions surround them, it is well worth taking a guided tour. Tours may be conducted from the Zambian side or Zimbabwean side or a combination of both sides.
Livingstone Island is where David Livingstone first set eyes on Victoria Falls. The activity includes a speedboat trip across to the Island, either breakfast, lunch or high tea on the Island, and in low water a swim in either the Devils pool or Angel’s armchair (this varies on the time of year).
To put the Victoria Falls into true perspective, they must really be seen from the air. Both short and long flights are available (approximately 12, 22 or 30 minutes). The short flight circuits over The Falls. The long flight goes into the gorge below The Falls, skimming above the rapids of the Zambezi River, then circuits The Falls and finishes off by flying over the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park.
Microlight flights offer unique and literally breath-taking views of the Falls and the spectacular gorge that the Zambezi has carved into the surrounding landscape over many thousands of years.
This is a unique wildlife safari in “4 x 4 vehicles of the river” through the channels and rapids between the islands littering the wide part of the river just above the Falls. Elephant, hippo and wonderful birds are the main wildlife attractions, and the views and sunsets are highlights. Excursions run in the morning, lunchtime and at sunset.
What better way to celebrate the end of the day than with a spectacular sunset on the Zambezi River. The cruise takes place along the river boundary of the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park. During the cruise, guests are likely to see hippos, crocodile, and some good birdlife. Possible other game sightings are elephant, giraffe, buffalo, and antelope (although sightings cannot be guaranteed). This cruise is more about relaxing on the river with good friends and family.
Considered one of the best stretches of commercially run river in the world, Batoka Gorge provides one of the most intense sensory thrills imaginable. Its 25 white-water rapids and striking scenery deep within the sheer black cliffs afford the adrenaline junkie a wild roller-coaster ride along a route carved over millennia by the Great Zambezi.
Probably the best way to appreciate the beauty, peace and wildlife of the Zambezi River above the Falls is to hop into a canoe and paddle down narrow channels and past stretches of one of Africa’s most enchanted areas. Paddle past hippo pools and spot abundant bird and wildlife as you drift past The Zambezi Game Park and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park areas.
The River Float activity takes place on the Upper Zambezi River, ideal for groups who want something a little calmer than the extreme of the white-water rafting and a bit less paddling and more fun than the canoeing. This activity is made even better when combined with an elephant interaction.
Experienced guides will take you to the best fishing areas where over 75 species of fish lurk in the waters of the mighty Zambezi. One of these fish is rated by many anglers as “the finest sporting and fighting fish in the world” – the renowned Tiger Fish. A variety of wildlife may also be viewed along the river.
The Elephant Cafe offers an unparalleled dining experience with its exclusive and enchanting setting. Take a speedboat adventure through islands and channels up the Zambezi River to The Elephant Café to be met on arrival by a magnificent herd of rescue elephants. Experience an unforgettable close encounter with these gentle giants. After this you can enjoy a delicious ‘bush gourmet cuisine’ meal, with ingredients foraged from the local area.
Breakfast, Lunch, High Tea, and Dinner experiences are available.
Beautiful classic steam locos and carriages, restored by Bushtracks Africa and Rovos Rail, incorporate a classic steam expedition with fine dining provided by The Royal Livingstone Restaurant and Chefs.
The train will travel on the “Cape to Cairo” mainline which will then take it to the Victoria Falls Bridge. Once on the bridge, you can disembark with a glass of bubbly in hand to really enjoy the magnificence of the Falls from the Bridge. You will also get a chance to buy souvenirs from the local sellers.
The Vic Falls Bungee Company run the bungee jump, bridge swing and the bridge slide at the same site; clients can do all three activities as a combo for a discounted rate called a Big Air Experience. All three activities are available as a single or tandem option. Fun and exhilarating!
Enjoy exploring rough terrain on the back of a quad bike. These ultimate adventure vehicles allow both the novice and experienced rider to explore the area at their own leisurely pace. Take in the panoramic views and possible wildlife sightings with friends and family under the supervision of a qualified guide. The quad bike trips vary from bush track riding, (whilst experiencing the local village life) to quad bike eco tours.
Enjoy the African bush veldt and the Zambezi River riding along the riverbanks on the back of a horse. Whether you are an experienced rider or a novice it is a very pleasant and peaceful way to see game and enjoy the birds and the ride. Experienced guides lead these trails and riders are put with friends or groups of similar riding abilities.
Victora Falls / Gwembe Reptile Park offer visitors a fascinating insight into the African reptile world. The park is stocked with Africa’s Nile crocodile and a collection of indigenous snakes.
Tour the historic, colonial town with an experienced guide. The tour can be tailored to your preferences and can include the following:
Chief Mukuni’s Village is a Royal village which was founded around the 13th Century. The Chief’s guides and the people of the village are more than happy to show visitors their huts and take you inside, explain how they are built and decorated, introduce you to various craftsmen and women at work and ask you to taste some traditional food and beer.
